A Highly Positive Review of
Radiohead- Hail to the Thief
By Ashley.
Radiohead's sixth album begins with a skittering, electronic buzzing that makes anticipating listeners begin to approach their stereos to check if the CD has been scratched. Just as their hand reaches the stop button, “2+2=5” eases into a suspenseful arrangement of haunting synthesized tunes and techo-like drumbeats. You know you're in for great audio treatment when you hear Thom Yorke's voice hauntingly drawing out each line and showing off his impressive range, leaving a stirring feeling in your stomach and a slight increase in heart rate*. Suddenly the climax occurs after a gentle build-up, when Yorke bursts out with “I'm not even paying attention!” over and over and the instruments change from haunting and mechanical to fast paced progressive rock, which makes it difficult for listeners to not bang their heads to.. a little.
The album is similar to Radiohead's previous masterpieces- borrowing from the electronical theatrics of OK Computer and Kid A. It is remarkably refreshing in its disparateness and confidence in experiment, and touches on all kinds of musical genres, providing the listeners with different and interesting experiences that could never have been predicted. It is Thom Yorke's familiar voice that keeps the songs recognizable as belonging to Radiohead. Part of the album indulges in robotic and electronically produced sounds mixed with samplers and even a glockenspiel, while others settle with progressive rock, containing screechy guitars and soothing bass. Elements of jazz are even used in “A Punch up at a Wedding.” The album concludes with a completely different vibe in “A Wolf at the Door,” which is Thom's closest attempt to political rap that he has ever made. His deep gasping for breaths between lines creates an exasperated and desperate mood, which the instruments compliment perfectly.
Hail to the Thief is so emotionally stimulating, almost hypnotizing. The effectiveness of the collection of different instruments used by all members of the band (Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Ed O-Brian and Philip Selway) is something that can be described as unique and miraculous.
